Celebrating Eid

In RE this afternoon we talked about why so many children were not in school yesterday.  We learned that they had been celebrating a special festival called Eid.  We enjoyed hearing about how each child celebrated.

Subhaan celebrated by playing games with his family.
Fatima went to the shops and bought some presents.
Ammar had a bouncy castle and some presents.
Anayah had a lovely day with her family.
Ayesha had some special treats and presents.
Ismah put on her special Eid clothes and spent the day at her Grandma's house.
Eshal ate lots of chocolate and went to the shops with her family.
Medinah spent time with her family.
Umar played football with his brother and wore his new clothes.
Zayan went to see his cousins.
Hakim had a massive pizza for dinner with his family (after he'd come to school!)
Zara went to see her family.

After that, Fatima showed us the beautiful Mehndi patterns on her hands.  She explained to us how her Auntie had created them for her.

After being inspired by Fatima's Mehndi, we made our own Eid cards for our family.

First we drew around our hand in pencil and decorated it with our Mehndi design.

Next we chose one coloured felt pen and went over our patterns.

After that we had to be very careful as we cut around the outline of our hand.

Finally we stuck our cards together and wrote a special message inside them,  We are very proud of our lovely cards and hope our families enjoy receiving them.

Spelling Stars

Well done to Eshal, Amelie, Ismah, Fatima and Hakim who got all of their spellings right in our test today.  We are very proud of you all.

Next week we hope to see more children in the photo so please remember to practise them at home.  Spellings will be sent home in your blue homework books on Monday.

We love reading in 1.1!

We have had a fantastic time in the library today.  We loved looking at all of the different books and chose some great stories to read together.

Our week in English

This week in our English lessons we have really enjoyed reading The Lion and the Mouse.

We were very good at joining in with the repeated language

"I can help you"

We changed our voices to represent the different animals.

On Tuesday we used adjectives to describe the lion in the story.

Today we used our adjectives to develop our sentences further.  We used similies to talk about the different characters.  Some of our writing was fantastic!

We can't wait to continue working on this story next week.

Addition in Maths

In our Maths this week we have been using different methods to practise our addition.

Some children had some very complicated number problems to solve.  Hakim is showing us how he used his number line to help him count on to find the answers.

The children on Blue table used number cards and cubes to help them with their addition.  they chose two numbers and wrote out a number sentence.  Then they counted the correct number of cubes for each card.  Finally they counted all of the cubes together to find the answer to their problem.

Once they had solved a few addition problems together, Cole, Maddie and Rico played the dice game.  They each rolled the dice twice to generate the numbers for their addition problem.  Then they recorded their problem on their whiteboards and worked out the answer.

Lilly-Mae, Daniel, Jon, Zara and Subhaan enjoyed playing Addition Bingo.  They had to match the number sentences to the pictures on their Bingo boards.

1.1 are getting very good at addition problems.  Can you find the answers to these word problems?

1.  It was Zayan's birthday.  Ammar gave him two presents and Umar gave him 3 presents.  How many presents did he have altogether?

2.  Cole, Jamie and Abid were playing football.  Rico, Alfie and Jon came along and joined in.  How many children were playing the football game altogether?

3.  Zara went to the shops. She bought a box of 6 cakes.  Jackson also went to the shop and bought a box of 4 cakes.  How many cakes did they have altogether?
Subhaan and Anayah came along and they ate 1 cake each.  How many cakes were left?

PE

We had great fun in PE this week.

First of all we reminded ourselves of Mr Simmon's lesson from last week.  He taught us all about balancing.  We remembered to make ourselves a strong base and use our heads and arms to stop us from wobbling.  We practised balancing using different parts of our bodies.

Next we played some games using beanbags.  We practised throwing and catching beanbags using one hand and two hands.  We decided that it was easier to catch it we used both of our hands.  We also thought of some tips to help people with their catching:

1. Always watch the beanbag.  If you don't watch it, you will lose concentration.
2.  Don't throw the beanbag too high.  It is easier to catch things when they are lower.
3. If you are throwing the beanbag to another person, make sure you look at them and don't throw it too hard.
4.  It is easier to catch with two hands.

Finally, we ended our lesson with some teamwork activities.  Miss Bowkett split us into four groups and told us to hold hands.  She then put one hoop between two of the people in the circle.  Our challenge was to pass the hoop around the circle without letting go of hands.  It took us a while to figure this out but, with the help of our teams, we were able to work out a tactic. Well done to the Green Team who completed this first!

Once we had practised this skill in our groups, Miss Bowkett increased our challenge.  We had to make one large circle with the whole class joining in.  We had to work together to get the hoop around the circle without letting go of hands.

We are going to have another try at this next lesson and see if we can be any quicker!
