Addition in Maths

In our Maths this week we have been using different methods to practise our addition.

Some children had some very complicated number problems to solve.  Hakim is showing us how he used his number line to help him count on to find the answers.

The children on Blue table used number cards and cubes to help them with their addition.  they chose two numbers and wrote out a number sentence.  Then they counted the correct number of cubes for each card.  Finally they counted all of the cubes together to find the answer to their problem.

Once they had solved a few addition problems together, Cole, Maddie and Rico played the dice game.  They each rolled the dice twice to generate the numbers for their addition problem.  Then they recorded their problem on their whiteboards and worked out the answer.

Lilly-Mae, Daniel, Jon, Zara and Subhaan enjoyed playing Addition Bingo.  They had to match the number sentences to the pictures on their Bingo boards.

1.1 are getting very good at addition problems.  Can you find the answers to these word problems?

1.  It was Zayan's birthday.  Ammar gave him two presents and Umar gave him 3 presents.  How many presents did he have altogether?

2.  Cole, Jamie and Abid were playing football.  Rico, Alfie and Jon came along and joined in.  How many children were playing the football game altogether?

3.  Zara went to the shops. She bought a box of 6 cakes.  Jackson also went to the shop and bought a box of 4 cakes.  How many cakes did they have altogether?
Subhaan and Anayah came along and they ate 1 cake each.  How many cakes were left?

PE

We had great fun in PE this week.

First of all we reminded ourselves of Mr Simmon's lesson from last week.  He taught us all about balancing.  We remembered to make ourselves a strong base and use our heads and arms to stop us from wobbling.  We practised balancing using different parts of our bodies.

Next we played some games using beanbags.  We practised throwing and catching beanbags using one hand and two hands.  We decided that it was easier to catch it we used both of our hands.  We also thought of some tips to help people with their catching:

1. Always watch the beanbag.  If you don't watch it, you will lose concentration.

2.  Don't throw the beanbag too high.  It is easier to catch things when they are lower.

3. If you are throwing the beanbag to another person, make sure you look at them and don't throw it too hard.

4.  It is easier to catch with two hands.

Finally, we ended our lesson with some teamwork activities.  Miss Bowkett split us into four groups and told us to hold hands.  She then put one hoop between two of the people in the circle.  Our challenge was to pass the hoop around the circle without letting go of hands.  It took us a while to figure this out but, with the help of our teams, we were able to work out a tactic. Well done to the Green Team who completed this first!

Once we had practised this skill in our groups, Miss Bowkett increased our challenge.  We had to make one large circle with the whole class joining in.  We had to work together to get the hoop around the circle without letting go of hands.

We are going to have another try at this next lesson and see if we can be any quicker!

Super Maths

This week in Maths, 1.1 have been learning about addition and subtraction.  Yesterday they had a very fun lesson which involved them solving number problems in different ways.

Mrs Poulson's group had a role play shop.  They priced up they items and then reduced them in the sale by 1p.  After that, they completed some number problems on their whiteboards.

Miss Palmer's group practised the symbols for addition, subtraction and equals with their arms.  Then they counted out towers of cubes and added and subtracted one.

Miss Bowkett's group rolled a dice.  They then had to add or subtract one from the number that they had rolled.

Everybody then worked on recording their problems as number sentences.  Super work everyone!

We're Going on a Bear Hunt

Last week in our English lessons we really enjoyed reading the story 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'.  This week we decided to go on our own Bear Hunt around school.  We linked our hunt to our Science lessons as we have been learning about our 5 senses.  We then described our hunt using our senses.

First we walked across the playground.  We listened very carefully and managed to hear the wind, an aeroplane, a train and a bird.  We then used our eyes and noticed that there was a cheeky seagull sat on the roof watching us!  Some of the children used their sense of touch to describe how the trees on the playground felt and a lot of us could smell the delicious school dinners coming from kitchen!

After that, our hunt led us to the back grass.  We could hear the children working in some of the classrooms and we could feel that the grass was softer and more slippy than the hard playground.  Some children noticed that there was a rug on the table.  They used their sense of touch to feel it.

After a lot of hunting, we finally managed to find a bear!

Miss Bowkett, Miss Roberts and Miss Taylor were very impressed with 1.1's work on the senses and wonder if anyone can answer this question?

Our first week in 1.1

We have had a fantastic first week in our new class.  Everyone has been very sensible and Miss Bowkett and Miss Roberts are really impressed with everyone's hard work.

So, what have we been up to this week?

In English we have been reading the story 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'.  We were very good at remembering the order of the story and we enjoyed working in groups to sequence pictures and it out.  Some of us came up with some great actions!

We have also learned a grown up word this week.  I wonder if anyone can remember what an adjective is?  We were certainly very good at thinking of our own in our writing!

In Maths we have been working on number recognition and counting.  We have been finding missing numbers in sequences, matching objects to number cards and we even managed to solve some addition and subtraction problems where we had to add and subtract one.

In Phonics we have been remembering some of our key sounds.  Our naughty monster flash cards have been helping us.

The key words we have focussed on this week are:

my, all, her, do, when, out, what.

Our afternoon lessons this week have mainly been PSHE based.  We spent a lot of time thinking about how to be a good classmate and the children in 1.1 have been trying very hard to follow their own advice.

On Wednesday, we celebrated the fact that our queen became the longest reigning monarch.  We had a lot of fun learning some interesting facts about the queen.

Miss Taylor's group made some fabulous crowns.

After learning about Queen Elizabeth, 1.1 were very excited to take part in Mrs Roberts' whole-school competition.  They had to draw a portrait of the Queen.  Miss Bowkett and Miss Roberts were so impressed with some of the artistic skills they saw!  We think the portraits look fantastic on our display board!

We can't wait to find out who will win the competition and receive a special gold coin.
